Rouen Cathedral, the gem of Gothic architecture, is not only the favorite place of the impressionist Claude Monet (remember his cycle of 30 paintings dedicated to the temple) and the writer Gustave Flaubert, who more than once captured the cathedral in the pages of Madame Bovary, but also the last refuge of the English king, who ordered leave your heart "in your beloved Normandy" - Richard the Lionheart. On my tour, you will hear the stories of the ancient cathedral and learn to "read" the symbols of any Gothic temple, no matter where it is built. The secret symbols and encrypted meanings of the majestic Gothic structures will finally cease to be a mystery! Individual excursion for 1-4 people Duration 1 hour Children Possible with children How it goes On foot € 90 per excursion Price for 1-4 people, regardless of the number of participants

Program

During the walk, we will thoroughly explore the Rouen Cathedral, both inside and outside: we will admire the picturesque western and rather modest, but nevertheless originally executed northern facade of the building, which, fortunately, survived the bombing of 1944.

After a detailed tour of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Rouen, you will learn:

  • how the construction of a Gothic temple was carried out in practice in the Middle Ages;
  • why Gothic buildings are always decorated with gargoyles and where this tradition comes from;
  • how you need to live your life in order to become a Saint (for example, the defender of Rouen Saint Romain and Saint Joan of Arc, who was burned on the Old Market Square in Rouen);
  • for whatever reason, the western façade of all Gothic cathedrals is always superbly executed;
  • how to correctly read a stained glass window on a biblical theme, and also why in cathedrals one can see stained glass windows on a "civil, domestic" theme;
  • what a sad and at the same time life-affirming story is told about the oldest stained glass window of the cathedral, made in "Chartres blue";
  • what place in the cathedral was Gustave Flaubert's favorite, and also from where "the first and only impressionist" Claude Monet wrote his cycle "Rouen Cathedral";
  • how the "northern people" with their cruel raids strengthened the statehood of the French Kingdom and why the sarcophagus of the Viking Rollon, buried in the temple, is so impressive in size;
  • how the high-speed Viking drakkar is arranged (we will see the layout in one of the temple's limits), and also learn how the navigator from Rouen gave the name to the whole American state.

After this one-hour walk (and, perhaps, an hour and a half), the majestic Gothic cathedrals will cease to bring sadness (and, at times, fear) to you, and the “flaming” Gothic, which Rouen is rightfully proud of, will add to the list of your favorite styles of architecture.
