Sea power We will take a look at a special area of the city - the Bethlehem quarter, where the main events of the Age of Great Discoveries took place. You will visit the Torre de Belém tower, erected in honor of the opening of the sea route to India, church of St. Mary of Bethlehem and, if desired, Jeronimos Monastery, executed in the national Manueline style, where in July 1497 Vasco Da Gama and his crew spent the night in prayer before sailing. At the end of the 19th century, local monks invented the Pasteis delicacy - Pasteish - a puff pastry basket with sweet custard, which you can try in the café-bakery
Heroic landscape On the banks of the Tagus River rises Monument to the Discoverers … On the nose of the caravel is the figure of the inspirer of geographical discoveries, the Infante Heinrich the Navigator, and on both sides behind him there are 32 figures of prominent Portuguese. I will tell you about the heroes of the monument, and you can go up to the observation deck, which offers a panoramic view of the old quarter and the river. On the square at the foot of the monument, we will look at the marble wind rose - a mosaic map of the world with routes and dates of sea expeditions of the 15th – 16th centuries.
Organizational details
- The excursion takes place on a tuk-tuk: this method of transportation will allow us to cover both the center of Lisbon and its outskirts
