What awaits you
Little Jerusalem We will walk the streets of the former Jewish quarter “La Juderia” and get acquainted with the chronicles of famous families and common people. The alley of the banker and philanthropist Alhadef, the school of Mr. Notrik and the gymnasium founded by Baron Rothschild are just some of the significant places in this area. I will take you to the 17th century synagogue, where today there is a museum that tells about the way of life of the Jews of Rhodes and the influence of local culture on them. The rich exposition of museum collections will take us into the past of the community, and I will tell you about the origins of its formation, everyday life, holidays and rituals, as well as the special language spoken by local Romaniots and Sephardic people
Memory politics Not far away, under the shade of lush ficuses, is the central square of the Jewish martyrs. We will talk about wartime and the allied air raids of the anti-Hitler coalition, as well as see a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust in memory of more than 1600 Jews of Rhodes who were exiled to Auschwitz, about the disappearance of the diaspora and attempts to revive it. Finishing the walk in the knightly part of the city, we will recall the relationship between the Jewish community and the Catholic Church of the Middle Ages, as well as examine the construction of the era of the Hospitallers.
Admission tickets to the Jewish Museum are paid separately from the tour.
The excursion starts at the entrance to the medieval town in front of the Colon harbor. You will find out the exact meeting point immediately after booking.
